It’s a good idea to know the rules of hiking and walking to help keep you safe and out of trouble. The main rule is who to give way to. The main three users of trails and footpaths are walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Walkers should give way to horse riders and cyclists give way to both walkers and horse riders. The reasoning behind this is that cyclists can stop and start quickly and are less vulnerable then walkers. Horse rides are given way to because a horse can be hard to control and due to their size! Hikers walking uphill have right of way over walkers going down hill and walkers in a group will give way to a smaller group or single walker. If in doubt give way to everyone!
